This year's race course will include a few new twists and turns, but is no less rewarding in terms of elevation gain, challenging terrain and endless views of the Yampa Valley.
Returning in 2024… Segment Challenges! There will be four segments along the course where racers logged into Strava will compete for bragging rights and special honors.
One of the most iconic segments of the race is the Little Moab Downhill. This rocky descent rings in at just a tenth of a mile long but don't let the short distance fool you. Your full attention will be required as you rapidly dart your way down along the sandstone base of this ledge-ridden section of trail. Arguably one of the more technical segments of the race, large jutting rocks make this feature a worthy challenge for any level competitor. Special thanks to Steamboat Orthopaedic & Spine Institute (SOSI) and their highly-trained specialists for patching up any fallen riders or runners that might succumb to the hazards found here.
At SOSI, we are HERE to keep you out THERE!

Between the calm serenity of Prayer Flag Road and the spookiness of the Blair Witch Trail lies Angry Grouse, host of the Alchemy Body & Bike Hill Climb segment in this year’s race. As the trail name suggests, this 0.2 mile section of singletrack has the ability to bring out one’s innermost anger as you gruel your way up this steep elevation gain.
Located at mile marker 2.4 from the start of the race, Angry Grouse is a short and pitchy climb that many a racer would rather soon forget. Angry Grouse promises a physical challenge sure to leave your quads screaming and your hamstrings tightening, if only for a short while. Some have called this a “punchy” climb, which might just make the case for a proper bike fit before you pedal your way up. Lucky for you, Alchemy Body & Bike has you covered.
Gaining time on your competition can be difficult in a race that’s contained mainly on singletrack. So strategically speaking, we’re encouraging racers to turn up the effort when you hit Cow Creek Road. Here at mile marker 9.9 you officially enter the Glas Deffryn Ranch Sprint Segment where the fastest time of the day will take the honors. And just like the Scottish Highland Cattle on Glas Deffryn Ranch, you’ll have nothing but fresh air and wide open spaces along this 2 mile section of the course. Finding the balance between post-descent recovery and all-out effort might be difficult for some, but those that seek the glory of sprint titles will absolutely love this portion of the race. Don’t forget to call your passes and keep an eye out for the natural dips and undulations of this county road. But most importantly, make sure to wave a friendly hello to the good folks of Glas Deffryn Ranch who have supported trails and biking in the Steamboat community for many, many years.

For those looking to be crowned as the strongest climbers in this year’s race, a 6.5 mile ascent needs to be summited first. Welcome to the Epic High Point Segment.
This segment spans from the beginning of the Beall Trail at mile marker 11.9 and runs to the top of Emerald Mountain. Capping out at 8,213 feet above sea level, the Epic High Point can only be found after escalating over 1,100 feet of vertical gain. But word of caution, you’ll want to pace yourself on this one. The trail twists and meanders quite a bit through the lower shaded forest, but opens up for full heat exposure towards the top. When you reach the aid station at the top of Beall Trail you’re just 0.1 mile to the highest point, where it’s all downhill from here (almost).
